Orange County - Spreading Joy with Joy Jars

Spreading Joy with Joy Jars - Picnic Day of Service Celebration

Spend an evening helping to spread joy with the Jessie Rees Foundation.

Our alma mater includes the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center - a national leader in basic and clinical research and innovative approaches to cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship; resulting in new imaging techniques that improve cancer detection, better drug therapies and therapeutic strategies, and more effective approaches to treating and curing cancer.

For many children, the other side of cancer care is Joy Jars.  Joy Jars began six years ago by Jessie Rees as fun-filled gifts of joy to share with her peers at Children's Hospital of Orange County.  Jessie was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011 and received treatment at CHOC.  Jessie lost her battle with cancer in 2012, but her idea continues to spread joy and to encourage other kids fighting cancer to Never Ever Give Up (NEGU).

For more about Jessie's story and how Joy Jars began: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdWLRH3Vhss.  For a touching message from Erik, Jessie's dad, to Jessie: http://negu.org/2017/03/jessie-journal-85/

In celebration of (what would have been) Jessie's 18th birthday, there will be an 18 hour event with the goal of stuffing 1800 Joy Jars.  We will be stuffing Joy Jars in the 7-8pm hour.

The event is kid-friendly.  However, if you are bringing a child under the age of 7, they must be with an adult who will work with them directly to ensure the Joy Jars are done correctly.

For any one interested, prior to the event, we will meet for dinner.

For any one going directly to the event, please plan to arrive ten minutes before the shift to check-in and complete the volunteer waiver.
